    About

This beautiful evergreen is a great yard or ornamental tree. It has a sturdy conical form, compact, dense, ascending branches, and deep green colored vibrant needles. This tree is also tough and low maintenance!  It is adapted to cold and is very resistant to Winter injury and requires little pruning.

    Wildlife

The Black Hills Spruce supports all kinds of wildlife. This tree provides nesting sites for birds and makes a good winter cover. The seeds are a source of food for songbirds, upland ground birds and small mammals.  The bark is enjoyed by porcipines and the foliage is lightly browsed by deer.

    Quirky Facts

The Black Hills Spruce is the state tree of South Dakota and was a valuable resource used in abundance by the Plains Indians. The inner bark and shoots were used as food and the sap was hardened and used as gum. The spruce wood was also collected for tipi poles.

Unlike Evergreens, which we ship year-round, Seasonal trees are shipped in early to mid-Spring and again in the Fall and are sent according to your local climate and this year's weather. This is done to be sure your tree is planted at the optimal time. Also, to be sure that your seedling arrives in a strong and healthy condition, we need to ship Seasonals when they are dormant in the Spring and Fall. Send us an email to info@thelivingurn.com or call us at (800) 495-7022 with questions or for more information regarding the delivery date of your tree.
