Affordable Cremation Urns: Growing in Popularity!

More and more families are choosing to be cremated instead of buried in the U.S. and throughout the world. According to the National Funeral Director’s Association (NFDA), the cremation rate in the U.S. is expected to increase to nearly 80% by 2035, up from just 25% in 1999. This interest is mainly due to a much lower cost of cremation (vs. burial) as well as families being less traditional than they once were. In line with this trend, many families are choosing to honor their loved ones in a beautiful and dignified way with an affordable cremation urn.

Affordable Cremation Urns

With the increased interest in cremation, many new and unique cremation urns have recently been introduced to honor our loved ones in special and dignified ways. This includes traditional indoor urns, urns that allow you to grow a tree or plant (a ‘living’ memorial), urns designed to scatter, and burial urns. Below we highlight some of the most popular and affordable cremation urns available today.

Affordable Traditional Indoor Urns

Traditional indoor urns are typically kept on the mantle or other special place in the home and can include a portion or all of your loved one’s cremated ashes. Many of these are a rectangular or oval shape and are made from wood, metal, ceramic, or other materials. An indoor urn, in particular, that was recently introduced and is growing in popularity among funeral homes and families nationwide is the EcoHome Urn. This unique indoor urn has an elegant look with a traditional rectangular shape and is made entirely from bamboo, a sustainable resource. It comes with an all-natural cotton pouch to hold the ashes inside of the urn. Offered at $159, the EcoHome Urn is an affordable option for many families.

Affordable Tree Urns

Many families are looking for a unique and affordable memorial to honor their loved ones. One of the most popular options currently chosen by families throughout the country is The Living Urn®, a patented BioUrn® and planting system designed to grow a living tree memorial. This special biodegradable urn can be used with a portion or a full set of a loved one’s ashes and you can select a tree of choice from many beautiful options offered in your area, or you can pick up a tree or plant at your local nursery to plant with the urn. The trees offered with The Living Urn® are delivered to your doorstep on a date of your choosing and come 2-4’ in height with a robust root system. Also, The Living Urn® comes packaged in a special bamboo cylinder casing that can be engraved with your loved one’s name, a symbol, or other information of your choosing - all for an affordable price of $139 for the Living Urn System only. If you wish to include one of our award-winning trees from our nursery, the cost can be an additional $30 to $40, depending on the tree. The Living Urn® can be found online or at a funeral home near you.

Affordable Indoor Plant Urns

There are some unique urn options now available that give you the ability to memorialize your loved one indoors or on your patio with a plant. This includes The Living Urn Indoors/Patio ($169)– this unique indoor planter urn comes in three colors (white, blue, and beige) and has a planting chamber in the center where a houseplant or bonsai tree can be planted in memory of a loved one. Another option is The Living Urn Planter ($195) which is an attractive decorative indoor urn made from recycled wood and comes with a small ceramic pot on top where a succulent can be planted.

Affordable Scattering Urns

According to the Cremation Association of North America (CANA), nearly 40% of people who are cremated prefer to have their ashes scattered. A scattering can be done at a special meaningful place to the person or their family, in a yard so they are memorialized close to home, or another beautiful place outdoors.

With the increase in the amount of people looking to have their ashes scattered, many new urns have recently been developed that are designed for this purpose. These are typically a long cylinder shape, which helps people scatter the ashes away from their body and avoid having the ashes blow back on them. Two of the most popular scattering urns include the Simplicity Scattering Urn ($39), which is made from recycled paper, and the Eco Scattering Urn, a patented urn made entirely from bamboo. The Eco Scattering Urn comes in small, medium, and large with prices ranging from $59 to $79. It also comes with a unique locking mechanism that allows you to better secure your loved one’s ashes in the urn during transport and this unique urn can be engraved with your loved one’s name and other information for a reasonable price.

Affordable Burial Urns

Some families will choose to bury a portion or all of their loved one’s ashes at a special location. This can be as simple as pouring the ashes into a hole in the ground, or using a vault burial urn that remains intact or a biodegradable burial urn. In general, the biodegradable burial urns are the most affordable burial urn options and have become quite popular. This includes the Eco Burial Urn, a special cylinder-shaped urn made entirely from bamboo. The attractive Burial Urn can be engraved with your loved one’s name and other information along with symbol of choice for an affordable price of $69.

Multiple Urns?

With so many uplifting and affordable cremation urns and memorials now available, many families are finding it to be a challenge to select a single urn to memorialize a loved one, and instead, choose to divide up their ashes into multiple urns. This can include scattering a portion of the ashes with a scattering urn at a meaningful place and including the remainder in a BioUrn® to grow a tree memorial, or keeping a portion of the ashes in a traditional indoor urn and then burying some at a special place with a burial urn. The Living Urn offers several elegant and affordable cremation urns to help memorialize your loved ones. Visit our store to learn more about our unique cremation urns and keepsakes today!
