Can I Plant a Living Urn Tree Memorial in Winter?

With frigid temperatures being felt from coast to coast, many families have been reaching out to our customer service team to find out if they can still do a Living Urn tree memorial for a loved one even though we're in the middle of the Winter season.

Below we explain how you can do this now and what options are available to you.

The Living Urn® Options for Winter

The Living Urn

The Living Urn has been a memorial option of choice for tens of thousands of families worldwide. The patented system includes a proprietary BioUrn® made only from heat and pressure (no glues or chemicals), RootProtect®, a unique all natural soil additive, mulch, and detailed planting instructions. In addition, every Living Urn comes packaged in an attractive bamboo case - great for ceremonies or for storing the urn holding your loved one's ashes until the planting date.

With the weather getting colder, you still have many options related to The Living Urn. This includes:

The Living Urn with a Tree - Plant Now

As long as the ground outside is not frozen, the simple answer is you can still plant a Living Urn tree memorial. Our trees are shipped in pots with robust root systems (not bare root), which gives added flexibility to families as to when they can plant the tree. To see the tree options we offer in your area and the cost of each with The Living Urn, click here and type in your zip code in the space provided.

The Living Urn with a Tree - Plant Later

Many families will order The Living Urn, select their tree, then choose to have their tree shipped in the Spring or at another date of their choosing. If the date is known at time of purchase, this can be confirmed at that time, however, if it’s not known, The Living Urn can come with a voucher for the tree that you selected. Then, all you would have to do is give us a call or email when you want it shipped or when you decide on a planting date. While the tree is shipped at a later date, The Living Urn is shipped right away and many families will choose to place their loved one’s ashes in the BioUrn® and keep the urn in the protective bamboo casing until it’s time to plant. The urn has no expiration and can be kept for months or even years!

The Living Urn with a Voucher for a Tree of Choice

Since the type of tree you choose for a loved one’s memorial may require the input of family or simply take more consideration, many families will order The Living Urn with a voucher for a tree of choice. With this, The Living Urn is shipped right away with a voucher - you can redeem it at anytime for any tree we offer and have it shipped directly to your doorstep when you’re ready to plant! The Living Urn System Only

The Living Urn System Only is one of our most popular options. With this you receive The Living Urn bio urn and planting system but without the tree. This includes our proprietary Bio Urn®, RootProtect® soil additive, mulch, detailed planting instructions, and packaged in an attractive bamboo protective casing. Then, when you’re ready to plant, simply visit your local nursery, pick up a tree or shrub, and follow the instructions provided to plant with The Living Urn. Indoor Urn Options

In addition to the traditional Living Urn that’s planted outdoors, we also offer a number of other options for indoor or patio use.  This includes the following:

The PlantUrn

The PlantUrn is a sleek decorative urn designed by CC Boyce and made from recycled hardwoods. It includes an inner chamber for a loved one’s ashes and a small ceramic pot on top that holds a succulent or small plant. Available in three sizes, you can find the right size for you – it can either hold a portion or all of your loved one’s ashes. Click here to learn more.

The Living Urn Indoors / Patio

The Living Urn Indoors/Patio is a popular option that families either plant with a bonsai tree or houseplant. These come in three colors (honey butter, celadon blue, and pearl white) and are made from high quality porcelain.  We offer a selection of beautiful easy to grow bonsai trees and houseplants to choose from to plant with the urn, or you can visit your local nursery to pick one up to plant with the urn.

EcoHome Urn

The EcoHome Urn is a new addition to our line that is made entirely from bamboo, a sustainable resource. Its design is a more traditional rectangular shape and comes with a hand-sewn cotton bag to hold your loved one’s ashes inside of the urn. This special urn is highly detailed and can be engraved with your loved one’s name, a saying, and a symbol of choice.

Alternative Urn and Memorial Options

For those who love the idea of The Living Urn, but are unable to plant in the Winter months, another option is to include a portion of your loved one’s ashes in a memorial now and the remainder in a Living Urn tree planting in the Spring or at another date of your choosing. Popular options include the following:

Scattering Ashes

scattering ashes

Scattering a loved one’s ashes can take place at virtually endless locations - a family home, favorite vacation destination, in the ocean, a place where they always wanted to visit, at a park, etc. We offer three types of scattering urns that have become quite popular with families and funeral homes worldwide – this includes the Eco Scattering Urn, a tube-shaped urn made entirely of bamboo, the Eco Water Urn, an urn that floats in the water like a buoy and gently frees the ashes in the water below, and the Ice Urn, a stunning urn made entirely from ice that floats gracefully on the water before spreading the ashes.

A scattering event can be performed by you or you can enlist a professional service such as Ecorial Ash Scattering Services to help you through the entire process. They obtain all of the necessary permits and take care of the logistics to make the process stress free. Ecorial offers both unaccompanied and accompanied scattering events and also provides videos/photos of the service, recording of the GPS coordinates and date/time of the scattering event on the Ecorial app, a Certificate of Scattering, custom keepsakes, and many more options. Click here to learn more and see the scattering locations offered (with many more coming soon!).

Burying Ashes

Another option is to bury your loved one’s ashes in a biodegradable urn, such as the Eco Burial Urn. This can be done at a family home, favorite destination, etc. and makes for a beautiful way to commemorate a loved one at a special place.

Urn Customization

All of The Living Urn options above can be laser engraved with your loved one’s name, dates of birth and passing, a sentiment, and a symbol of choice (and at an affordable price!). Many families choose this option to add a personal touch to their loved one’s urn and memorial.
