About
Akebono Flowering Cherry, a cultivated variety of Yoshino Cherry, is a small-scaled deciduous tree flaunting an abundant number of large, soft pink flowers through its bare tree branches during mid-Spring. It is famous for having the biggest flower among all the cherry trees. Its lightly-scented blossoms changes from pink to white as it opens. During Summer and Spring, its foliage will appear as shiny and dark green, then turns into golden yellow with some hints of orange during the Fall. It grows best with moist and well-drained soils. It also loves full sun and has resistance to clay and sand as long as there is enough drainage. It is low maintenance and can resist slightly dry environment. Make sure to check the tree daily and water it heavily during the first few weeks after planting. Trim it from time to time to get rid of dead and damaged branches.
Wildlife
The Japanese Flowering Cherry is an important source of food for many small birds and mammals including robins, cardinals, and waxwings.
